Greetings my darling fans!I recently became hooked on a new game. Well, new. The original game is from 2000, but that doesn't matter. I've always believed that gameplay and story are things way more important than stunning graphics and fantastic cinematics. In 2001, Diablo II Lord of Destruction, which is an expansion pack for Diablo II, was released. It performs all the duties you would expect an expansion pack to do. You will get two new character classes to play with, the druid and the assasin, another chapter in the saga, as well as some tweaks, bringing some handy additions to the game making things a little more convenient. It doesn't go above and beyond, but the expansion pack gets the job done.
First i'll talk about the fifth chapter. The goal here is to kill Diablo's brother Baal (The lord of Destruction). It happens in snowy mountains and your base is in a barbarian village under siege. Then you have to complete six smaller quest on your way to the end. It actually takes quite a long time to finish this chapter, where you kill your way through a bunch of new monsters and bosses.
The different character classes you choose from has always been important, and now there are two more on the menu. The assasin has an interesting mix of melee abilities and magic. When she level up, she can develop martial arts abilities, psychic abilities and most interesting, the trap abilities. They add a little more tactical element to her destructive forces.
Next new class is the Druid. This is a traditional class, and it's all about the forces of nature. Earthquakes and hurricanes are two of his specialities. He can also summon a bunch of furry friends to feast on the enemies. The druid can also shapeshift into a bear or a wolf.
These two new classes are a very good addition to the existing classes.
Another improvements of the expansion pack is the game's resolution. The original game was in 640x480, and now it's in 800x600. Not exactly amazing, but the screens are a lot more cleaned up, and everything looks a lot more crispy. It's perfect to play on my Asus EEE, with its 10" monitor (and external mouse is very needed!). It runs very smooth :)
The expansion also give you a larger inventory chest, and it's possible to collect even more gold.
The gameplay has changed somewhat by adding new difficulty levels, and it can be very smart to team up with someone using BattleNet. Some of the monsters are immune to certain types of attack, so getting some help can be useful. With the increased difficulty levels, come a lot of new powerful weapons and armor, not to mention there are specialized weapons for the character classes, like the assasin's claws.
As far as breathing new life into Diablo II is concerned, Lord of Destruction accomplishes this easily. The new characters are great, and the new chapter makes it almost perfect!
If you enjoyed the original Diablo II, you'll love this expansion!
Peace out,
Mircha
